Mako, my zora character, in an undersea garden with fictional fruits. My mom's birthday is coming up, and I wanted to draw her something. She really liked Mako, so I figured I'd draw him with a background. Hopefully I can go out today and get a frame for this.
Zoras are really fun to draw once you know how, and I decided to add my own touches to him, such as the colorful fins and the purple markings on him. There actually is a lot more to this picture than it is portrayed here, but the scanner ate it. Scanner's too small and picture is too big...ugh
Took much longer than I thought, roughly twelve hours plus virtually nonstop, but it was worth it. Faber Castell and Derwent Studio pencils on Strarthmore Sketch paper
Easily the best race, totally agree! As for the tips, I'm more than happy to help out.
I use colored pencils, Faber Castell because they blend really well together and they come a in a large variety of colors, although they're a bit expensive. What I like to do when coloring is color one thing at a time, for example a face. I'll start out with a light shade of color, such as a really light blue for the zora. Once I have a light shade down, I take a q-tip (yes, the thing you clean your ears with) and blend it the layer using a small circular motion. Once that's done, I take a darker shade of the same color (a slightly darker shade of blue), then I use that to get the basic idea where the shadows are. Repeat the blending process, then a third darker shade, and repeat. Once I have the three shades of color I want, I take a black pencil and very lightly go over the areas where it's the darkest, like underneath the eyes, nose, along the jaw. What I recommend for blending the black is a color pencil blender, which you can find at A.C Moore, Michael's,and other arts and crafts stores, and use the marker to blend the black. Q-tips work, but it looks more gray than black. Finally, after I'm done with the black, I use a kneaded eraser to lift some of the lighter colors to make a highlight, then I soften the edges a bit with a bit more blending.
I hope that helps. Maybe I should make a tutorial if that doesn't, once I know how

Only a fool would sniff out serpents. Though I do so to kill them, and I am no fool
Wow, that was a lot more advice than I expected. Thanks for being so willing, until now, I used napkins and toilet paper to blend the colors. I'll open one of my art kits to use the blender. Thanks!

You're very welcome! Used the same material awhile ago, but I read a tutorial somewhere and the artist said she used q-tips, so I experimented with it and found that it worked.
